Haringey Boxing Club.

Haringey Boxing Club was founded in 1999 by Gerry Willmott MBE, an ex Met Police Officer, Police Boxer and experienced coach of Met and National Police teams.

HBC is one of the first Police Community Boxing Clubs of GB (PCBCGB) as well as one of the most well-known and successful.

Gerry recognised Boxing to be a powerful tool to positively impact the health and well being of young people at risk from the Haringey Borough and surrounding area.HBC work with young people from the ages of 11 and up to 35 years of age. They work with the local Youth Offending Services and Social Services who refer young people to HBC if they have expressed an interest in boxing.

As well as being a community boxing club HBC is a competitive and successful club where young people are provided the opportunity and a pathway to progress with their boxing. Many notable and successful boxers continue to belong to HBC for the quality training and true community approach including double Olympic Gold medallist Nicola Adams.

Club boxers are encouraged to attend three sessions every week and do their own running on the other days. Evening sessions for competitive boxers and those wishing to be competitive boxers are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 5.30pm – 8pm. With 20-30 in the gym during each session.

Additionally to the year round weekly sessions, HBC run school holiday programmes for young people 11-16 years of age.

The HBC programme teaches discipline, promotes goal setting and offers a supportive pathway to achieve goals. Through participation in boxing and training, young people understand and see the positive outcomes they can obtain such as better fitness, weight loss and the reduction of obesity, awareness of the negative effects of smoking and poor diet on their ability to train.

HBC sees young people going home tired after training, promoting going to sleep earlier, therefore they get a good nights sleep which reflects on improved school attendance.

The holiday programmes encourage young people off the streets and away from trouble. HBC provide the young people with educational workshops which cover topics such as gangs, knife crime, drugs and alcohol, and first aid.

HBC as a true community club provides young people with a sense of community and belonging, where they are surrounded by good role models for life as well as role models to aspire to in the sport of boxing. HBC is a safe and positive environment for young people to be a part of.
