Left Hook Boxing Club.

Founded over 15 years ago by Enzo Giordano and Oner Avara, this vibrant boxing club has become a cornerstone for young people and adults in the heart of a diverse, low-income community. Head Coach Matthew Burke who started and continues to run the Amateur Team and kids classes, is at the club nearly full-time. He leads a dedicated team of 4-5 qualified coaches, with Oner serving as club manager.

The club welcomes 60-70 young people under 18, including about 20 carded boxers, and offers sessions for all ages—from children as young as 6 or 7 up to adults. With a maximum of 20 participants per session, classes fill up quickly, motivating members to arrive early and stay engaged.

Most members attend three times a week, with flexible options for those who drop in occasionally. The club is proud of its inclusive atmosphere, with around 45% of attendees being girls and women. Notably, the club has produced a female World Champion, Marie Connan, and boasts numerous success stories of young people who have turned their lives around—some moving from challenging backgrounds to become boxing judges and coaches.

This club is more than just a place to box—it is a safe haven, a launchpad for personal growth, and a powerful force for positive change in the community, helping young people build confidence, resilience, and lasting skills
